Simulation and Modeling of Friction Force and Oil Film Thickness in Piston Ring – Cylinder Liner Assembly of an I. C. Engine
نویسنده
چکیده
The piston ring assembly is one of the key parts of internal combustion engine. Its performance decides engine power loss to over come friction force and determines the performance of the whole engine. As per the literature review it is reported 40 to 50 % of the total mechanical friction losses in piston ring cylinder wall interface. The present work mainly focused on study of basic tribological parameters that influences performance of an internal combustion engine. Mathematical model is developed using average Reynolds equation. Parametric study is performed on 150 CC, 2 Stroke Internal Combustion Engine. The oil film thickness (OFT), piston friction forces (PFF), and Ring friction variations are simulated under different variable i.e engine speed, lubricants and different ring geometry. The simulated results of piston friction force, ring friction force and oil film thickness are compared with published literature. Key wards: Oil film thickness, Piston friction force, piston, ring friction force

Prediction of Oil Film Thickness in Piston Ring - Cylinder Assembly in an I C Engine: A Review
I C engines are the largest energy converting units for the mobile application across the globe and millions of litres of oil is converted into mechanical energy using these engines every day. It has been recognized that a large amount of energy is lost in the friction between Piston ring – Cylinder assembly. Hence this area has been the interest of research for decades. Oil film thickness form...

The oil film behavior of a series of fifteen lubricating oils was tested in a single cylinder spark ignition engine. The oil film thickness between the piston and cylinder liner of this engine was observed using the Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) technique. The data was examined for correlations between physical properties of the oil and characteristics of the oil film. The region of the oil ...

The friction pair of piston rings and cylinder liner is one of the most important friction couplings in an internal combustion engine. It influences engine efficiency and service life. Under the excitation of piston slaps, the dynamic deformation of cylinder liner is close to the surface roughness magnitudes, which can affect the friction and lubrication performance between the piston rings and...

In the paper a comprehensive model of a piston ring pack motion on an oil film has been presented. The local oil film thickness can be compared to height of the combined roughness of sliding surfaces of piston rings and cylinder liner. Equations describing the mixed lubrication problem based on the empirical mathematical model formulated in works of Patir, Cheng and Greenwood, Tripp have been c...

The piston ring which prepares mechanical sealing of a combustion chamber, should have significant abrasion resistance and less friction loss, using appropriate ring coating. The coating widely used is CrN, because of its good abrasion resistance at room temperature. However, it suffers from some shortcomings, such as high abrasion rate at temperatures above 200°C and lack of self-lubricating p...
